Patients benefit from your support
Smoking is directly responsible for many hospital admissions and brings smokers into contact with healthcare professionals. Each contact represents an important opportunity to assist people to stop smoking. Brief advice to stop smoking results in an almost twofold increase in long-term quitting compared to no advice at all. Offering quit smoking advice to hospitalised patients is also one of the government’s six key health targets. ALL healthcare professionals are expected to follow ‘ABC’:
- Ask all patients if they smoke
- Provide (and document) Brief advice to quit
- Offer Cessation support
Although not everyone wants to quit, most will benefit from using nicotine replacement therapy to manage withdrawal. It is important to offer all smokers advice and support.
Cessation support options
Waitemata DHB offers a variety of no cost smoking cessation programmes to support those interested in quitting. For further details please visit the Waitemata DHB Smokefree intranet site (click on the Smokefree 2025 Logo at the bottom of the intranet page).
